logos that wouldn't work as logos

Been a while since I've worked on this project, but maybe that's a good thing as we kind of got a bit stuck with the previous ones, the idea was nice but on paper I don't think it looked as good as we expected.

So earlier on today I've done a few sketches, thought this one below looked like it had some potential so I whacked it on the scanner and recreated it with vectors and stuff. The brush on the original sketch looked a bit small so I made it bigger.

I showed this to Maz and I think she was quite happy with it, she said it was definitely more professional. I also showed it to a couple of others who said they enjoyed looking at it to a certain extent.

However there are of course issues!!!!

The main one being that these will not work at a small size! HOW SHALL WE DEAL WITH THIS??

I think the best idea is to use this image on the homepage of Maz's website, and then create a simplified version to use in other locations, business cards etc, social media pics and whatnot. That way we get the best of both worlds whilst retaining consistency.

There are also a number of other issues that I would like to improve. For example, I think it would be nice if that brush went through the circle instead of lying on top of it.

some more sketches i have made recently

Might have photoshopped them a little bit though!!! Will get round to printing them soon, basically they are going to be headers for the film poster/comic style things Mitchell and I are making.

Ricky Trickartt

I love it

critical

http://www.fabriclondon.com/blog/view/guide-to-the-visual-identity-of-critical-music

Pretty interesting interview/discussion with Kasra and Ricky Trickartt with regards to the visual identity of Kasra's label, how they go about determining the final aesthetics of the label/products. I'm aware different people have different feelings on the subject, I vaguely remember reading something said by Peter Saville, I think he said something along the artwork not really mattering too much as long as something's there!!?? I don't know. But I do know people also think the opposite.

It's good that Ricky, the designer is able to sum up the artwork in one word, it kind of gives the whole body of work a rationale of sorts. I think maybe this is the key to creating a consistent visual aesthetic, even though myself personally I'm not really bothered about consistency at this point in time.

I suppose the main thing, again mentioned by Ricky is that they strayed away from the whole dark sci-fi style that seems to dominate a lot of drum n bass cover artwork, I think the aesthetics of the genre as a whole have had a lot to do with my overall (lowered) impressions of it and I imagine the same will apply to a lot of people....

it's a SIGN

I'm going to change brief 5! Instead of making things that aren't massively graphics-orientated, I'm going to paint some signs, despite previously being advised not to do so.

This is because I like SIGNS and I like PAINTING. And as of tomorrow, I am going to combine the two.

edgy!

"You're taste is getting really edgy" - Eddie.

I suppose it is a bit but I've just gotten really bored with all the normal stuff! Here are a couple of posters I found on Madteo's facebook page which I quite like. The second one is coming from wania/sex tags/ one of those sorts of camps, I'm a big fan of this kind of thing at the moment.

smallville flyer art / omar s

Best thing I've seen yet today...some flyer art from some people at Smallville records which I think is based in the Netherlands, promoting a night with Omar S who is from Detroit which perhaps explains the flyer's content. Not sure who designed it but I'm a big fan.

C47 sketches

Few sketches for the D&AD C47 brief. I had done some previously a few weeks back but lost track of them, but they didn't contain any worthwhile ideas really anyway- I had mindmapped a lot of stuff but it was all very obvious and unimaginative.

Anyway, I started from where I left off with that, with the idea of new media being a bit of a pain when it comes to buffering and watching good programmes in sufficient quality.

I did a bit of word association (as I was pretty stuck) and landed on the idea of second helpings, which is demonstrated on the second sketch, but thought this would lead to complications regarding conveying the actual message, and that it would be possible to come up with a simpler idea, so I thought maybe the crane game that is popular in arcades might be a good place to start...

so basically I will generate some images to use and see what I can do with this idea, the deadline's on the 20th so I'm not left with a massive amount of time to do any more than this I don't think, but we'll see.

digging deep

I like this lettering for Soulshine Mixes, someone in Australia who runs an interesting soundcloud, https://soundcloud.com/soulshine_mixes

quick logo development

Few ideas we messed around with before the weekend, for various reasons it was pretty urgent to at least get something together for their soundcloud but also various other things. So all these were done in a very short space of time, as a result they chose to use the one shown at the bottom - perhaps as it was a little similar to the blue note / jazzy style compared with the others. However I am looking to spend a more sufficient amount of time developing this logo and ways of using it.

^^^ I feel that there are certain issues with the hierarchy of the two words when placed in these positions, to a certain extent they agreed with me, so this is something I will be attempting to improve imminently.

covers

Few jazz record covers that have caught my eye today thought they were all Blue Note but they're not actually, some are Prestige and some are others...just doing some research for my friend's band, who have incorporated many elements of Jazz into their own style, so of course the visual aspect of their sound should ideally reflect this in some way. I think the main thing to note here is the obvious imperfections that are evident with each one, the text rarely aligns fully, slight overlaps here and there, and logos that are slightly crooked. The limited colour palette is another thing that catches my eye and seems to work very well.

Here n there brief

Here & There

Photography Zine

Brief:

Propose a series of photography zines containing images taken on various excursions around Europe.

Background:

Over the last two Summers I have collected a significant number of photographs taken at various places. It seemed as good a time as any to begin collating and organising these into personal publications, potentially to distribute depending on interest.

Requirements:

The images used must be somewhat intriguing and contain something out of the ordinary, in order to produce a publication that is elevated beyond the context of family and friends. Abstract and quirky images often depict a more interesting story than standard photographs.
some development sketches for the film titles.

MLAT

Some pretty interesting posters I found on madelikeatree.com, tiny bit edgy but I like them. Not sure who's made them.

Here is the original:

The logo design has to be completed before next week.
